David Leach is the former managing editor of explore magazine, the current chair of the Department of Writing at the University of Victoria, and the author of Fatal Tide: When the Race of a Lifetime Goes Wrong (Viking Canada). He caught a case of “pharomania” while researching the history of light stations on the West Coast for the Canadian Coast Guard.
